9 gr8 screenings
we've had a mad couple of months with an unprecedented array of fantastic screenings
we showed films two at a time with audio on switchable headsets at the straight 8 retrospective2 in the prestigious ICA cinema in london
it was an intensely enjoyable and unusual experience
we chose the film pairings for maximum impact and oddity...
watching a shocking and dark film about a man with a perversion
that makes him want to eat parts of his own body preferably served by prostitutes (damnation)
while hearing from outside your headphones the other half the cinema roaring with laughter at
julia davis and rich fulcher frolicking in their 2008 fetishistic straight 8 caper (black whispers in an elephant sky)
was plain bonkers and totally ace. whew. and that was just one of 21 pairs of films
not if... but when we do this again, don't miss it. we won't
thanks to ace straight8ers jim owen and nick scott who teamed up to experiment with the first 16mm 'straight 8'
which we showed without anyone - not them OR us - ever having seen! all gr8 fun
huge thanks to 750 audio post-production who made the arty audio mayhem possible and to rushes and soho shorts as ever
also at the fabulous rushes soho shorts fest:
the best straight 8 films of 2010 premiered over 3 electric nights in the beautiful curzon mayfair and renoir cinemas
the crowd was on fire with the usual blend of terror & euphoria as the filmmakers and their crews saw their work for the first time ever
and we don't just have events in london:
we jetted to spain as the official short film partner of the FIB international short film festival, a fantastic short film fest that runs alongside benicassim music festival
we showed a straight 8 selection, including another premiere, in new york with new filmmakers
thanks to them for having us and to gr8 str8 8er andy basore (a.k.a. andrewjive, director of scrap paper in 2008) for introducing the show
we returned to bornshorts in denmark for the third year on the trot
and we had our first ever italian screening at l'isola del cinema, a great and magical summer-long festival on the river tiba
thanks to luca gennari, the director of those dreams that on the silent night intrude; the secret cinema of jerzy treblinka, which premiered at cannes this year
we're really excited to be launching the first ever straight 8 documentary event. it's just like straight 8 always is, but for docs were inviting anyone to make a documentary on one 3 minute 20 second cartridge of super 8 film the first time you see your film is at its premiere, in a packed cinema, at sheffield international documentary festival on november 6th doc/fest is the UK's finest documentary and crossover media festival, conference and market and it's the only place in the world where you will meet sectors of the whole of the british documentary industry we're not setting a brief, your film just has to be a documentary... about anything we’re leaving it to you to decide what a documentary is, and we’re going to show all the films, so there’s no wrong answer whatever inspires or excites you, we'd love you to tell that story the deadline for completed films is 23/10/10 and the deadline for your soundtrack is 30/10/10 huge thanks to kodak for supplying us with cutting edge negative film-stocks and to soho film lab for processing and providing us with beautiful, digital versions of all the films
straight 8 documentary event with sheffield doc/fest
entry costs £50 (£40 for students), we send you your film, you shoot it, send it back to us unprocessed and upload a soundtrack separately
