january.  such an important month. the month of dreams and plans.  the month that straight 8 2011 entry fee is reduced to only £50

yes - until midnight on 31st jan pay only £50 to join in one of the most legendary short film challenges on this earth or beyond

(after that it's £70)

as you know straight 8 is open to anyone anywhere and our unique rules make it the most level playing field for pro's and wannabe's to mingle in.  some of the best straight 8's are made by first time filmmakers as proved by our january guest editor, malcolm finlay

we have amazing screenings lining up for the year including our 9th consecutive time at cannes film festival and uk premieres in the best london cinemas as part of rushes soho shorts festival.  plus screening the best doco straight 8's at the internationally reknowned sheffield doc fest. we are also open to screening anywhere in the world and enjoy helping people organise their own screenings - drop us an email if you'd like to set one up

our guest editor for january is malcolm finlay whose charming and technical straight 8 film, the last trip, took straight 8 by storm in 2008.  for his day job, malcolm's a cardiologist which probably explains why his use of clever in-camera techniques like front-projection worked clinically well.  read his guest edit and be truly inspired

we've just been showing films at slamdance in utah, during sundance film festival.   thanks to kodak and slamdance for the opportuntity and we hope to repeat that and add more north american screenings going forward

four filmmakers flew out from LA, vancouver, new york and london to see their film for the first time ever at an electrifying screening. other's watched the program premiere online at exactly the same time in rome and london. well done to all those filmmakers and the others whose straight 8's made a buzz at slamdance

each month, shooting people hold an online film competition.  you upload your short and they are all viewed and rated by the community, creating a leaderboard. the three films at the top after a month are sent to one of shooting people's high-profile judges, who gives a personal review of each, and chooses the film of the month

we've teamed up with shooting people for a special edition in january: straight 8 films only.  and we've secured top movie director and straight 8 veteran, edgar wright (shaun of the dead,  scott pilgrim vs. the world) to judge your films

as the hangover clears you might find your new year's resolution is to make a short film

we're showing a retrospective of a decade of straight 8 excellence crammed onto one screen at the london short film festival

there are so many… we’re showing two at a time - with the audio on switchable headsets 

two 4:3 straight 8 films fit perfectly in a cinemascope crop.  so it’s meant to be.  bonkers.  but fun

it's happening at the fabulous roxy bar and screen, at 8pm this monday, 10th january

tickets are £5 on the door

we held our first retrospective² screening at the ICA last year and it went down a storm so this one is not to be missed

we’ve chosen the film pairings for maximum impact and oddity...

watching a shocking and dark film about a man with a perversion that makes him want to eat parts of his own body preferably served by prostitutes (damnation) while hearing from outside your headphones the other half the cinema roaring with laughter at julia davis and rich fulcher frolicking in their 2008 fetishistic straight 8 caper (black whispers in an elephant sky) is bonkers and totally ace. 

whew. and that's just one of 21 pairs of films

huge thanks to 750 audio post-production who’ve made the arty audio mayhem possible
